Natarajasana (Flying Pose)
Known as "The King of the Dancers" Pose because it was adopted by Lord Nataraja (Shiva), known as Lord of the Dance, who danced creation into existence; who sometimes danced alone and sometimes partnered by his consort, variously called Parvati, Uma, Kali and Durga; and sometimes as the Flying Pose.
1. Stand erect.
2. Bend the left leg back at the knee, grasp the big toe and pull towards the head. This in itself requires considerable suppleness and will not be achieved without much practice.
3. Then thrust out the right arm as if pushing some invisible object and lean forward at an angle of 45 degrees.
4. Place the left hand behind the back so that the back of the hand touches the right hip, and swivel to the left.
5. Return to the original position and perform the exercise with legs reversed.
Benefits: Excellent for the leg muscles, back, balance and poise. Will help ballet dancers and is much more easily mastered by women than men because their natural suppleness.
